Dr. Sanduk Ruit is a Nepalese eye doctor who developed a low cost, high quality method to treat cataracts, which is a major cause of blindness. He created a technique called small-incision cataract surgery. This technique is quick, doesn’t need stitches, and uses affordable artificial lenses made in Nepal to help cure blindness. This approach allows surgeries to be done in remote areas with limited resources, helping people who couldn’t afford or access eye care.

Dr. Ruit has restored sight to over 180,000 people across Asia and Africa. He co-founded the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu, which offers affordable eye care and trains doctors from around the world. His work has reduced preventable blindness in Nepal and inspired similar programs in other countries. For his efforts, he has received several awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Isa Award for Service to Humanity.
